7 albums that won't be on my 'best of the year' list
SURFING ON STEAM — ... would be foolish not to involve keyboardist/vocalist Morgan Kibby in all of their future endeavors, seriously. UPDATE: School of Seven Bells are returning to Low-End Theory at The Airliner this Wednesday, Dec. 3rd for $10. The Airliner 2419 N. Broadway Los Angeles, CA 90031 Ryan Catbird and a host of other solid bloggers created MBV. And no, it's not a tribute page to My Bloody Valentine. ...

ANNOUNCINGS
Said the Gramophone — I'm happy to announce the launch of MBV, a new website bringing together Said the Gramophone, Fluxblog, Large Hearted Boy, Catbirdseat and Chromewaves - ie, five of the eldest, creakiest and most consistent musicblogs. All of our sites are syndicated there, but there will be additional content - including contributions from Matt LeMay. We're not entirely sure where MBV is headed, but we hope you'll head over there and help us turn it into a site for intelligent & passionate discussion. --- It was nice to visit ...

marathonpacks: expert textpert — ... Behold: the latest in mp3 blog technology, brought to you by, like, the people who invented it (And, a Pitchfork guy). In their own words: "Music is important to us, and we know it’s important to you. So what’s say we get back to basics? No wall-to-wall banner ads, no nine zillion navigation links, no winking, blinking, farting widgets littering the screen, no software algorithms spewing out “recommendations.” Just music lovers, telling you, every day, about the music they love." MBV (yes, that's the ...

No Rock And Roll Fun — It's an increasingly cold world out there - when even the Independent and the Daily Mail are having to share the same toilets, what hope is there for independent bloggers? Hence, perhaps, the thinking behind MBV, a kind of United Artists of music bloggers, featuring Fluxblog, Largehearted Boy, Chromewaves, Said The Gramophone and others in a mix of feeds-and-unique content. ...

Antony & The Johnsons bring The Crying Light to Toronto
.: chromewaves.net v7.5 — Jason RothernbergAlmost four years has passed since Antony & The Johnsons released their breakthrough album I Am A Bird Now, which would garner rave reviews from most quarters and ultimately go on to win the prestigious Mercury Prize. It’s a record that I’ve run hot and cold on over those years - sometimes Antony Hegarty’s quavering vibrato is the most heartbreaking thing I could imagine hearing, other times it just feels excessive and unnecessary. It probably depends on my own emotional state. Though the Johnsons took ...

The Era Of Music Blog Monopolies
BUZZGRINDER — ... soon you may not even have to churn your own butter! Earlier this year, Buzznet announced that they acquired some of the biggest names in the game — Idolator, Stereogum and AbsolutePunk — with financial help from Universal Music Group. Then came word that two of my personal favorites, largehearted boy and Catbirdseat, were joining forces with Chromewaves, Fluxblog and Said the Gramophone for something called MBV. Think Fark, but too wordy. And now the other giant, ...

It's Beginning to Smell a Lot Like Moustache!
Heart on a Stick — ... managed to get last year's out by January 4th.)  The Hype guys seem to be accelerating the cycle not to beat critics' aggregates like Pazz/Jop and the Idolator Poll, but to beat other individual Top Ten Lists.  Such is the way of the web.  I hope they still get a decent amount to input, because I could use some good fucking recommendations for music and blogs.  So if you can, please do. * Hooray for Effort Dept.:  Introducing The Official Music Tumblr Blog!  And: The Official Music Tumblr Blog's Tumblr Blog ...

Heartbreak No. 3: The Blogosphere As The New Status Quo [80 '08 (And Heartbreak)]
Idolator — ... But there is so much noise out there it's not surprising a lot of my favorite MP3 blog progenitors decided to collectivize under the MBV umbrella. And outliers' voices are squelched by the press-release repeaters that now make up so much of the blog landscape. Much like the (dying) print world, everybody's either consolidating or burrowing further into their niche. Part of the blogosphere's success as a new media movement, in my mind, depends on its ability to act as a collective. When a preponderance of choices presents itself, things tend to slide down the path of least ...

Bop-A-Boo: A Joke, right?
yewknee.com — ... I was browsing through MBV yesterday and this article regarding "reselling music mp3s" caught my eye. The article basically talks about how this new service, bopaboo is set to be the first "reseller" of digital music - meaning, you upload your DRM free mp3's and can sell them at whatever price you'd like. The practice falls under "first-sale law" that also allows consumers to sell CD's and such. But this has got to be a joke, right? The fact that CNET covered this gives it an air of legitimacy but I'm having a really hard time believing that this is someone's ...

Top 10: Music Blogs to Read in 2009!
Pop Tarts Suck Toasted — ... 9. MBV; This is a very new entry into the music blogger canon, but considering it consists of entries from folks like Largehearted Boy, Catbirdseat, Fluxblog, Said the Gramophone, and Chromewaves this makes it possibly the most newsworthy new blog since the invention of blogs. All of those folks have their own very notable blogs but once they are combined and put together into one place it's basically the blogging equivalent of a supergroup. SHARPNESS AND THE SHAPES
Said the Gramophone — While the rest of MBV salutes the debut album of Micachu & the Shapes, streaming here today online, (and Dan will be writing about a song tomorrow), here's a few words on tracks from Filthy Kids, the Micachu mixtape that got me so excited in the first place. Micachu - "Had Enough". Micachu - "Train for a Brain". (with Golden Silvers?) Micachu - "Soon Dun Blud". Buzzworthy??? Or Not???
Pop Tarts Suck Toasted — ... Thoughts: Followers of the super blog known as MBV may have noticed a bit of a trend running through most of yesterday's posts as the individual bloggers behind the site each did their best to hype up Micachu, her band the Shapes, and their new album Jewellery. After seeing that out pouring of love from some well respected peers I had to check and see if all the hype they were bestowing upon this 21-year old artist was worthwhile. It turns out Micachu is making some pretty insanely creative music right now. Following on the Filthy Friends ...

Dinosaur Jr. Wish That The Lawn Would Rise Up To Meet You [Art?]
Idolator — OK, it's not that bad. But it does raise the question: How much would be too much for this album cover were you to see it at a thrift store, nestled in a slightly beat-up wooden frame? $2? $5? "It depends on whether or not the frame was still in decent condition"? [via MBV] ...

CONTEST – Royal City artwork giveaway
.: chromewaves.net v7.5MBVGuelph’s Royal City were a band who were just ahead enough of their time to miss out on the great Can-rock explosion on the early 2000s, singing their swan song in 2004 with Little Heart’s Ease, just as many of their contemporaries, collaborators and followers – at one time or another, their roster included the likes of Leslie Feist and Owen Pallett – rose to far greater heights both at home and abroad. But they’ve never been lost or ...

Soviet Album Covers
yewknee.com — ... MBV pointed out this huge repository of Soviet Russia Album Covers and I made sure to pour over each one. Many would lump this sort of thing into the worst album covers type of category but I would strongly disagree - each one of these is exactly on par in terms of quality of design, subject matter and presentation as anything coming out of the US at that time. I love how so many stereotypes ring true on so many of the images - from the 80's "Trapper Keeper" style covers to the hair metal space fantasy images, they nail it every time.

The Horrors: "Mirror's Image" (Video)
Prefix — ... adopting a late-80s shoegaze noise. The video for the set's third single, "Mirror's Image," replicates the videos from that era with its shoddy green screen footage that looks like it was shot in one of those video-creating booths at the mall, $13 video effects, and a lot of black clothes. Next up, if they're bent on following the My Bloody Valentine playbook, is about 15 years of no new music. Given the leap the band made on Primary Colours, let's hope that's not the case.
