Bono Says U2 Are 'Humbled and Delighted" Over Glastonbury

The band have been announced as the Friday (Jun. 25) headliner at the 40th anniversary festival. Bono told the BBC News website , "Everyone in the band is very excited about it." The headline slot will be the first time the band have played a festival in 25 years. It will take place in the middle of their North American tour.

BBC Star Ross Predicts Muse for Glastonbury

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , UK Chat show host and BBC Radio 2 presenter Jonathan Ross has fuelled speculation over next year's Glastonbury line-up by claiming that Devon's neo-prog trio Muse are "probably" going to headline one of the nights on the Pyramid Stage. Spinner reported last week that Muse were under consideration for the top slot. The renowned Twitter fan tweeted that the band's singer-guitarist Matt Bellamy has revealed to him they were looking good for the prestigious billing. Muse were guests of 'Friday Night with Jonathan Ross' and performed 'Uprising' and 'Undisclosed Desires'. Ross wrote: "Didn't chat to them on the show, but Matt [Bellamy] told me they are probably doing it."

Now that Irish stadium legends U2 have been confirmed as the first headliner of the 40th Anniversary event, speculation is mounting as who will join them at the top of the bill. Muse have long been mentioned in connection with a headlining appearance and a peek at their schedule reveals a rather telling gap between Glastonbury's Jun. 23 to 27 dates. There has been no confirmation from either the Muse camp or festival organisers, however.

Ian McCulloch: 'U2 Are for Teenagers'

Filed under: News Echo and the Bunnymen 's Ian McCulloch has once again singled out U2 for a tongue-lashing, branding the Irish megastars' music as "flag-waving" and "immature." McCulloch has regularly stated his aversion to Bono and friends and appears to love using the press to express his disdain. Last year he referred to them as "spud peelers" whose ambition was to join music's elite stars like Bob Geldof , Sting and "all them c---s who no one really likes." This time around, while he was slightly less vitriolic, McCulloch continued to ridicule U2 for appealing only to a younger, less-mature fan base and being nothing more than a commercial enterprise. "Bands all say they want to be as big as U2, but weirdly no one ever says they're influenced by them," he told New York magazine. "That's because there's nothing there, really."

In fact, he didn't know if anyone would still care about his music in the near future. "I had no idea what the future would hold," the former Creedence Clearwater Revival frontman tells Spinner. "I used to tell people 'I'm trying to make records that they'll still play 10 years from now.' That was a very audacious statement because in those days, the rock 'n' roll from 10 years prior was all but ignored." The song was inspired by President Dwight D. Eisenhower's grandson, David, who married then-President Richard Nixon's daughter, David. Fogerty, who was nearly drafted a few years earlier, knew that the younger Eisenhower wouldn't have to worry about getting involved with Vietnam. With their experience of massive venues and crowds, the undertaking is unlikely to be daunting for the band, but their lack of experience of festival crowds could be their undoing, some have warned. Nicola Slade, editor of the music industry newsletter Record of the Day told the Guardian that she thinks the band's show at the 40th anniversary of the festival could come across as "weird." "They are not going to be able to do their usual U2 spectacular that people have come to expect from them," Slade said. "U2 are a divisive band -- you either love them or you hate them. I think it will be a difficult audience because it is not their core contingent."

U2 at Glastonbury: 'They will be incredible'

I think the thing that we at NME found most exciting is the fact that the Friday night Glastonbury headline slot is generally reserved for slightly smaller bands, or bands that have not yet proved themselves. So if U2 are headlining on Friday, what does that mean for the rest of the festival? What are the other bands going to be, and just how big? We've seen Arctic Monkeys play that slot, and for Kings of Leon it was their first chance to step up. It's often an occasion for bands that are still learning, and instead people will get a show from real professionals. The big rumour is that the Rolling Stones may turn up, which they are categorically denying. We did hope for David Bowie, but that looks like it's not going to happen. There will be lots of scope for impressive collaborations and it will be interesting to see who, if anyone, gets on stage with U2. I think they will be incredible. Whatever you think of their CDs, U2's live show is out of this world – you'll probably be able to see it ...

Bono and co have been slated for the Pyramid stage's top spot on Friday 26 June, in what will be their first ever appearance at the festival. The Irish megastars are regularly the subject of pre-Glastonbury speculation but this time around, in advance of the festival's 40th anniversary, a 'source' has told the paper that their appearance is a done deal. If U2 did perform it would be the first time that the band has played Glastonbury. The source is quoted as saying: "Everyone is over the moon that the deal has been done. Michael really wanted a huge name for the 40th anniversary and the fact U2 have never played Glastonbury in their 32-year career only adds to the mystique. So what does he see to be among the biggest differences? "It's very hard. Radio is fragmented," he tells Spinner. "There was Top 40 radio and DJs could be influential and you could make a career out of Philadelphia or Cleveland and you built to Chicago and all points west and north. That doesn't necessarily exist." So are today's artists at a disadvantage? "You got a poor kid that wins ' American Idol ' and then he's expected to be on the same level or playing field as the Rolling Stones or U2 or Bon Jovi the next day. That's not fair," Bon Jovi says. "We were allowed to have the third album be the one that was the breakthrough record. I don't know if a kid these days is ever gonna break 100 million in album sales. I don't think that's ever gonna happen again."

Even better, the company -- created by business and fan club managers of bands like the Rolling Stones , David Bowie , Sting and U2 -- will place original album art on the wine labels. The first three products will be Rolling Stones 'Forty Licks Merlot,' 'Woodstock Chardonnay' and Pink Floyd 's 'The Dark Side of the Moon Cabernet Sauvignon.'
