Slash Debuts New Song with All-Star Band

Slash doesn't just help L.A.'s homeless youth with a nickel or dime, the ex-GNR axeman recruits Blink-182's Travis Barker, Wolfmother's Andrew Stockdale, Dave Navarro and Chris Chaney from Jane's Addiction for an all-star benefit concert -- and debuts a ass-kicking new song in the process. Sunday night at Hollywood's Avalon, the rockers gathered for Slash & Friends, a gig benefiting the Los Angeles Youth Network , and ripped through the new Slash song "By the Sword," a Black Sabbath-meets-'90s-alt-rock rocker with Stockdale on lead vocals. While Slash and Co. rocked out onstage, even more music stars watched on, including Ozzy, Linkin Park's Chester Bennington, and Billy Idol, who all made appearances onstage throughout the night, as well. So what the hell is a riff anyway? There are numerous definitions out there, but most are along these lines: "a short rhythmic musical phrase which may be repeated often during a piece." Through the decades as folk begat blues, blues got rhythm then spawned rock 'n' roll and its many bastard offspring, the guitar riff became king, sometimes even usurping the vocal melody as a song's main calling card. Whole careers have been built on killer guitar riffs, so it's fitting that as another decade winds down we celebrate the most unforgettable air guitar anthems of all time. Jack White Says Expect a New Dead Weather Disc in Early 2010

The Dead Weather’s debut Horehound isn’t even a year old, but they’re already plotting their next album. Earlier this week, the band told Rolling Stone they will hit the studio soon to work on their follow-up LP, which could be finished by the time they embark on their Australian tour in March. “We’ll probably be having a new album by that time, if we’re lucky. We have a lot of songs cooking right now, we’ve been playing a few of them live and I’m sure by March the entire 20 or 25 songs will be onstage by then,” Jack White told Rolling Stone . “We can’t tell you that much about it except that it’s gonna be really expansive, and I use that word loosely in a scientific sense, meaning that I’m just using it to distract you.” Check out hot live shots of the Dead Weather. Slash Defends Fergie Team-Up on Guns N' Roses Classic

The pop singer joins Cypress Hill -- famed purveyors of beats and blunts -- on the new rendition which appears as a b-side of the Japanese edition of Slash's new single, 'Sahara.'

Them Crooked Vultures Impress Slash in L.A.

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News Them Crooked Vultures -- the supergroup of Dave Grohl , Led Zeppelin 's John Paul Jones and Queens of the Stone Age 's Josh Homme -- kicked off the start of a brief American tour in Los Angeles this week. The band, who just released their heavy, self-titled debut album, got the chance to show off their skills to around 2,000 fans at the sold-out Wiltern on Tuesday. "Ladies and gentlemen!" was Homme's opening greeting to the crowd -- which included actor Breckin Meyer and Homme's wife, Brody Dalle -- before he provided an introduction. "We're a new band called Them Crooked Vultures and we're gonna have a good time."
