Jimi Hendrix's 'Voodoo Child' Voted Best Riff

Filed under: News , UK Legendary guitarist Jimi Hendrix 's 'Voodoo Child (Slight Return)' has been voted as the best guitar riff ever by the users of musicians' website MusicRadar.com . The track which topped the charts way back in 1970 received 14% of the votes cast and edged Guns N' Roses ' classic rock ballad 'Sweet Child O' Mine' into second place. The last time the poll was conducted -- five years ago by MusicRadar.com's sister Magazine Total Guitar -- the G N' R track triumphed. Few contemporary acts made the top 50 with pollsters opting for classic rock legends over today's axe-wielding young bucks. Only two tracks from the last decade made it into the top 20 with Muse 's 'Plug in Baby' at number 11 and the White Stripes ' 'Seven Nation Army' at number 15.

Northern Exposure: Escalate, 'Where There's Vans, There's Guns' -- Free MP3

Filed under: Exclusive , Northern Exposure , Canada Characterizing something as "dance music" is always tricky, given that such a signifier can span an entire spectrum of sound, from electro to disco to funk and beyond.

Toronto instrumental quartet Escalate somehow manage to embrace that wide scope in their loose, experimental approach, which runs the gamut from upbeat grooves to chilled-out soul without skipping a beat.
Formed in 2000 by two sets of brothers -- Grant and Tyler Drygas hold down the rhythm section while Shandy and Jordan Kern provide the melodies -- the band foregoes vocals in favour of building dense layers of funky instrumentals that reference jazz, soul, funk, R&B, even a soupçon of Afrobeat.

Slash Debuts New Song with All-Star Band

Slash doesn't just help L.A.'s homeless youth with a nickel or dime, the ex-GNR axeman recruits Blink-182's Travis Barker, Wolfmother's Andrew Stockdale, Dave Navarro and Chris Chaney from Jane's Addiction for an all-star benefit concert -- and debuts a ass-kicking new song in the process.

Sunday night at Hollywood's Avalon, the rockers gathered for Slash & Friends, a gig benefiting the Los Angeles Youth Network , and ripped through the new Slash song "By the Sword," a Black Sabbath-meets-'90s-alt-rock rocker with Stockdale on lead vocals.

While Slash and Co. rocked out onstage, even more music stars watched on, including Ozzy, Linkin Park's Chester Bennington, and Billy Idol, who all made appearances onstage throughout the night, as well.

"By the Sword" is the third song to leak from Slash's solo debut, also called Slash & Friends , which is expected in early 2010. And one look at the album's roster, and it's evident just how many friends the afro-sporting ...

Find more top indie music news, videos, and blogs on IndieBlips: Indie Music, Slash, Guns N' Roses

Filed under: News In a move that is likely to set headbangers frothing at the mouth with rage, one-time Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash has defended his decision to use Black Eyed Peas ' vocalist Fergie to sing on a new version of his former paymasters' global smash 'Paradise City.' The pop singer joins Cypress Hill -- famed purveyors of beats and blunts -- on the new rendition which appears as a b-side of the Japanese edition of Slash's new single, 'Sahara.'
